Baltimore Immigration Memorial
Mission Statement
Although Baltimore ranked among the nation's leading recipient
ports through the late 19th and early 20th centuries, welcoming as many
as two million immigrants, this history has received such scant popular
and scholarly attention that even many local residents are aware just
how many families could trace their migration to the United States
through the Port of Baltimore.
The Baltimore Immigration Memorial aims to address
this need by:
-
Creating and building a memorial and immigration heritage center in
Locust Point, near the original landing sites of close to 2 million
immigrants who came to Baltimore in search of a better future,
devoted to remember and honor our ancestors, their sacrifices and
hardships, as they pursued their dreams of freedom and prosperity;
-
Establishing educational programs dedicated to documenting and
preserving the history of Baltimore’s immigrant communities, past
and present, central to the history and civic life of our city, and
ensuring that this historical information be available to
generations to come;
-
Achieving and promoting international awareness and recognition of
Baltimore’s important role in the immigration history of the United
States of America, and to establish a research and tourism
destination for those who may wish to come and visit this site; and
to
-
Actively seek funds from local, state and federal governments, as
well as from the private sector, to sponsor and support these goals
and enterprise.
